1. Turn the controller to OFF
Find your sprinkler controller (garage, utility closet, or an outdoor wall box) and turn the dial or mode switch to OFF. If the sprinklers stop, the problem is in the schedule or the controller — an easy fix.
2. Still running? The valve is stuck open
A zone that keeps running with the controller off means the valve is stuck — usually debris under the diaphragm or a worn solenoid. At the valve box, twist the solenoid (the cylinder with wires) a quarter-turn clockwise until snug. If water stops, leave it and call us for a proper valve repair or replacement.
3. Shut off the irrigation supply
Every system has a shut-off where it tees off the main water line — often a ball valve near the backflow preventer (the brass assembly above ground near the street or house). Turn the handle a quarter-turn so it sits crosswise to the pipe. That kills water to the sprinklers without shutting off your house.
Broken pipe or geyser?
If water is coming from a broken pipe rather than a sprinkler head, use the same irrigation shut-off — or your home’s main shut-off if you can’t find it. Then call us: broken pipe repair is everyday work for our crews.
